Saks Fifth Avenue to Close Union Square Location After Nearly 30 Years

After almost three decades of serving San Francisco’s Union Square, Saks Fifth Avenue is officially closing its location at 384 Post Street. The closure is scheduled for May 10, 2025. The store, which originally opened in 1981, had been a major retail presence in the downtown shopping district.
The decision comes after several strategic changes by the company. In 2024, Saks transitioned the Union Square location to an appointment-only shopping model, aiming to adapt to changing consumer behaviors. Although the appointment format reportedly saw strong engagement, Saks Global Enterprises—the store’s parent company—decided to close the location as part of a broader integration plan following its acquisition of Neiman Marcus later that year.
Saks intends to maintain a presence in the Bay Area through existing Neiman Marcus locations in Union Square and Palo Alto, along with online sales. Employees affected by the closure will be offered opportunities to transfer to Neiman Marcus stores where possible or receive separation packages.
The departure of Saks Fifth Avenue adds to a growing list of high-profile retail exits from Union Square, including Bloomingdale’s and the upcoming closure of Macy’s. Despite the challenges facing the area, new investments are underway. Retailers like Zara are opening a new four-story flagship location, and Nintendo is planning a new store set to launch on May 15.
City leaders, including newly elected Mayor Daniel Lurie, are actively working on revitalization efforts for Union Square. Initiatives like “Vacant to Vibrant” are being implemented to attract new tenants and strengthen the downtown shopping experience.
